Drone Registration
Contrast to common misconception, registering a drone with Canada Transportation is super easy, simple and quick. Anyone (individual or business) can register drone for just $5 with Transportation Canada in 3 minutes.
Fee: $5
Drone between 250 Grams & 25KG: All drones between 250 grams and 25 kg in weight must be registered. This includes custom-built drones and drones built from a kit or off-the shelf.
Drones Less than 250 Grams: Drones under 250 grams do not need to be registered unless something is attached to it that increases its weight to 250 grams or more.
Drones Over 25 KG: Drones over 25 kg also do not need to be registered, but require a special flight operations certificate instead.
Benefits of registration
- If you lose your drone, registration may help in returning it to you if it is found.
- If there is a recall from the manufacturer, we may be able to notify you.
What you need before you start
It only takes 3 minutes to register a drone. To begin, you will need the following information:
- Purchase date (if applicable)
- Make, model, serial number, weight and type of drone
- Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Interac card
Steps for registration:
- Go to Transportation Canada Website - Drone Management Portal
- Sign-In to Transport Canada or create a new one.
- Click "Register a drone"
- Enter the following information
- Date of Purchase (Approximate)
- Select the Make & Model or click "The make or model is not listed" if you are unable to find it in the drop down list.
- Enter the make, model and type of drone.
- Pay the $5 fee
- After Payment, you will receive the Registration Number.
- Display or paste the registration number anywhere on your drone.
